We’re looking for a motivated and community-minded Animal Control Officer to join our team at Horowhenua District Council. 

If you are looking for a role where no two days are the same, and you want to work within a small team of passionate professionals then this could be the position for you. 

You will respond to animal-related incidents, enforce local regulations, and educate pet owners on responsible animal care. As part of our Animal Control team, you’ll deliver essential services on behalf of the Council and our community, playing a key role in connecting people with the right resources and ensuring the right expertise is applied to every situation. 

This role is responsible for ensuring public safety, with monitoring and enforcement of key legislation, The Dog Control Act 1996, Councils Dog Control Bylaw, and The Impounding act 1955, investigating complaints and addressing non-compliance. 

Some of the key tasks for this role include: 

  • Investigate public complaints relating to dog control and undertaking appropriate enforcement options including written warnings, issuing infringements, and recommending files for prosecution. 
  • Providing education to the public around responsible dog ownership and educational talks to different community groups and schools. 
  • Entering all case file notes, and complaint documentation in the Authority database, attaching photographic evidence and witness statements, and linking all related records. 
  • Assisting other agencies such as Police, Community Groups, SPCA and Welfare Agencies when required. 
  • Investigating complaints of roaming stock and taking the appropriate action in accordance with standard operating procedures and relevant legislation. 
  • Pound duties and caring for the animals that come into our care, and the euthanasia of dogs, as required 

Permanent part-time: weekends and a half a day throughout the week – 20 hours, with an on-call component that is rotated throughout the team.

Permanent full time:  Monday to Sunday as per roster 40 hours, with an on-call component that is rotated throughout the team.

Please note for the part time person: For your training period approx. 4 weeks depending on the individual and you will need to be available Monday to Friday. Once training has completed your hours will change to part time as per the roster.

You'll be an amazing communicator who is passionate about animal welfare and public safety. You will be friendly, approachable and capable of building relationships with all internal and external Stakeholders. Being a self-starter and able to self-manage will be key to the success of this role. Your attention to detail will be on point along with your time management and investigative skills. You will respond in a timely manner to all animal-related enquiries, addressing community concerns and fulfilling requests with professionalism and care. 

He aha te wariu o te utu kaimahi? - What’s the salary?   

Circa $62,000 dependent on skills and experience + Pro rata for part time.
